Live to 80? The No. 1 Way to Do It

The best way to live a long life and live it well is a combination of staying safe, staying healthy, and embracing your spirituality. Prevention is the key. Some things are obvious, like always wearing your seat belt and avoiding illegal drugs. Others take a bit of health education so you know which foods and vitamins are best for promoting longevity.

As the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says: None of us is born with an instruction manual on how to stay alive until 80 or beyond. It takes guesswork, good common sense, and a bit of luck. But there are things we can do to maximize our longevity odds. And some of these may surprise you.

Be Safe

Accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults. To avoid the grim reaper at such a young age, the Post-Dispatch offers this common sense list. Make sure you always:

  • Wear a seat belt.
  • Drive safely.
  • Avoid harmful drugs and substances, legal or illegal.
  • Avoid family violence and violence with strangers.

Be Healthy

  • Exercise: The No. 1 way to stay healthy--whether you're a little tyke or a grouchy geezer--is to exercise. Find something you enjoy and do it for 30 minutes a day most days of the week. No excuses. The Post-Dispatch asserts that some doctors say exercise is so powerful it can even lessen the severity of illnesses passed through your family genes.
  • Eat right: Eat fish three to four times a week, load up on fruits and vegetables, get plenty of calcium and other vitamins, and don't smoke. Enjoying one or two alcoholic beverages a day may be beneficial, but more than that is harmful.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: The secret to a long life may be maintaining a healthy weight in your young adult years and staying physically active in later years--and this holds true even if you suffer from diabetes, heart disease, or cancer as a senior citizen. Reuters reports that researchers from the University of California, Irvine have determined that elderly people who reported weighing the least at age 21 and who participated regularly in physical exercise as senior citizens were the most likely to eventually celebrate their 90th birthday.

Be Spiritual

None other than the venerable Mayo Clinic has suggested that one of the best ways to improve your chances of living a century is to recognize the value of spirituality in your life. "Nurture your spirit, no matter what you call your source of inspiration," advised a recent health letter the clinic published.

Other research has shown that people who regularly attend worship services, live longer. It's not the act of going to the church, synagogue, or mosque that extends lives, but rather the involvement in the religious and spiritual activities.

One other theory: People who are involved in religious groups benefit from the social networks they form. If they get sick, others look out for them. Religious beliefs may also lead to less risky behavior. In addition, a well developed sense of spirituality may help people better cope with life's tough psychological demands.

Uh Oh. Use It or Lose WHAT?

Fitness experts are fond of saying: Use it or lose it. Turns out, they're right.

People who don't exercise are more likely to suffer serious physical and psychological setbacks, Science Daily reports of a new study from The Ohio State University. But the good news is that the opposite is also true: People who exercise get a cognitive, psychological, and physical boost.

The study: A group of 28 older adults who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung disease that kills some 120,000 people every year in the United States, completed a 10-week, monitored exercise rehabilitation program. The first five weeks of the 10-week training session consisted of daily aerobic workouts, strength training, and stretching exercises. During the second five week period, participants continued the exercises at least three days a week. Afterwards, they were each given an individualized home exercise program to follow on their own. The researchers contacted the participants again after one year to see if they had stuck with their exercise programs and to give them the same physical, psychological, and cognitive tests that they had taken at the beginning and end of the initial 10-week exercise program.

The results: After the initial 10 weeks of exercise, all the participants achieved increased cognitive, psychological, and physical function. Eleven people or 39 percent continued exercising at home, while the remainder either exercised only sporadically or not at all. Those who continued to exercise maintained the cognitive, psychological, and physical benefits, while those who did not exercise lost their gains in nearly every mental and physical characteristic that the researchers measured.

"It's solid evidence that across-the-board declines occur when people stop exercising," said lead researcher and psychology professor Charles Emery. "No matter what, you've got to keep up the physical activity."

The study appears in a recent issue of the journal Health Psychology.

FDA approves Orphan Drug Status for revolutionary cancer drug for children

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20, 2008 -- The Cure Our Children Foundation, a nonprofit charitable foundation dedicated to children, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Orphan Drug Designation of the foundation's unique drug product for children with Ewing's Sarcoma cancer. The efforts to develop this drug were made possible by the generous volunteers and researchers in private industry and at two universities.

Orphan Drug status allows for recognition of the potential viability of a drug therapy while providing a variety of benefits during the drug approval process. These benefits include waivers of certain FDA fees, the availability of government grants, and FDA attention and assistance during the review process.

This groundbreaking new drug combines two modern technologies: biotechnology and nanotechnology. This incredible technology is analogous to the concept of a Trojan Horse, and is expected to have very far reaching implications for other cancer treatments. The product consists of cell matter that is modified to have the same genetic code as the cancer cells, but that matter is not viable food for the tumor cells. I was knocked into the present, the unmistakable now, by Joni Friedman's head as it collided with the right side of my jaw. Up until that moment my body had been running around within the confines of a circle of fourth-grade children gathered for a game of dodge ball, but my mind had been elsewhere. For the most part I was an abysmal athlete, and I was deeply embarrassed whenever I failed to jump bravely and deftly into a whirring jumprope, ever threatening to sting if I miscrossed its invisible boundaries, like some science-fiction force field. Or worse, when I was the weak link yet again in the school relay race. How could one doubt that the order in which one was picked for the softball team was anything but concurrent with the order in which Life would be handing out favors?

Not that I considered myself a weak or easily frightened person; in more casual games I excelled, especially at wrestling (I could beat every boy but one on my street), playing war (a known sneak, I was always called upon to be the scout), and in taking dares (I would do just about anything, no matter how ludicrous or dangerous, though I drew the line at eating invertebrates and amphibians). I was accorded a certain amount of respect in my neighborhood, not only because I once jumped out of a secondstory window, but also because I would kiss an old and particularly smelly neighborhood dog on the lips whenever asked. I was a tomboy par excellence.

But when games turned official under the auspices of the Fleetwood Elementary Phys-Ed Department, everything changed. The minutea whistle appeared and boundaries were called, I transformed into a spaz. It all seemed so unfair: I knew in my heart I had great potential, star potential even, but my knowing didn't translate into hitting the ball that was coming my way. I resigned myself early on, even though I knew I could outread, outspell, and outtest the strongest kid in the classroom. And when I was picked practically last for crazy kickball or crab relays, I defeatedly assumed a certain lackadaisical attitude, which partially accounts for my inattention on the day my jaw collided with Joni Friedman's head.

Maybe I was wondering whether Colleen's superiority at dodge ball would be compromised by her all-consuming crush on David Cassidy, or maybe some other social dilemma of prepubescence ruled that days game. I do know that the ball I was going for was mine. I hadn't even bothered to call it, it was so obvious, and though it was also obvious that Joni was going to try to steal it away from me, I stood my ground. The whistle to stop playing began to blow just as the ball came toward us, toward me. I leaned forward and Joni lunged sideways, and suddenly all thoughts about Colleen's social status or Joni's ethics were suddenly and sharply knocked out of me.

I felt the force of our collision in every one of my atoms as I sat, calm and lucid though slightly dazed, on the asphalt. Everyone was running to get on line. I assume Joni asked me how I was, but all I remember is sitting there among the blurred and running legs, rubbing the right side of my jaw, fascinated by how much pain I was in and by how strangely peaceful I felt. It wasn't the sensation of things happening in slow motion, which I had experienced during other minor accidents; it was as if time had mysteriously but logically shifted onto another plane. I felt as if I could speculate and theorize about a thousand different beautiful truths all in the time it would take my lips to form a single word. In retrospect, I think it's possible I had a concussion.

My jaw throbbed. Rubbing it with my hand seemed to have no good or bad effect: the pain was deep and untouchable. Because the pain was genuinely unanticipated, there was no residue of anxiety to alter my experience of it. Anxiety and anticipation, I was to learn, are the essential ingredients in suffering from pain, as opposed to feeling pain pure and simple. This alien ache was probably my first and last experience of unadulterated pain, which perplexed me more than it hurt me.

"Are you all right, dear?"

Interrupted in my twilight, I looked up to see Mrs. Minkin, who was on playground duty that afternoon. She fell into the category of "scary" adults, and from there into the subcategory of adults "with cooties." In her plaid wool skirts and thick makeup, luridly ugly to schoolchildren's eyes, Mrs. Minkin was not someone to whom I was willing to admit distress.

"I'm fine, thank you."

And I was fine: as quickly as it had happened, the sharp ache in my jaw receded and my sense of self transported itself back to the playground. I quickly stood up and brushed myself off The looming issue now was how far back in line I would have to stand because of this bothersome delay. By the time I was back in the classroom I had forgotten the incident entirely.

I was reminded of it again that evening as I sat on the living room rug earnestly trying to whip up a book report I had been putting off for two weeks. Now, to my grave dismay, the report was due the very next day. Gradually I became aware of possible salvation: I had a toothache. This wasn't as welcome a reason for staying home from school as a cold or a fever because it would entail a visit to the dentist. Had it been only a minor toothache I'd probably have preferred to suffer the wrath of my teacher rather than my mother's inevitable agitation, but now that I had noticed the ache it seemed to be worsening steadily.

10 Common Smoking Triggers: How to Make It Through Without a Cigarette

Many common activities or events can trigger the urge to smoke. Knowing how to deal with them can help you deal with these triggers:

* Finishing a meal. Get up from the table immediately and start a pleasurable activity. Try a walk or a new hobby.
* Drinking coffee. Change the way you have coffee: the place, the coffee mug, everything that you did when you were smoking. Wait until you are at work to have your morning coffee.
* Talking on the telephone. Use a phone in a different room when you are at home. At the office, there may be little you can do to change location. Have small objects nearby to handle while you are on the phone.
* Between tasks. Instead of smoking a cigarette before moving on to your next project, try taking a short walk or reading a section of the newspaper or a chapter of a novel you're enjoying.
* After an argument, disappointment, or negative event. If you are still feeling angry or upset, let off the steam by walking briskly around the building.
* In the car. Since smoking has been banned in so many workplaces, cars are becoming a popular place to smoke. Remove the ashtray from your car, or fill it with potpourri or tiny strips of paper on which you've written the reasons you don't want to smoke anymore. Instead of smoking while you drive, play your favorite music on the stereo and sing along.

Activities at work and social events may trigger the urge to smoke. Here are some suggestions for avoiding these triggers:

* Other people who smoke. Avoid the smoking areas at your workplace. If there is an entryway where people who smoke gather during breaks or before work, find another entryway, or time your arrival to avoid the smokers.
* Work breaks. Avoid places where people who smoke go during the break. Seek out the company of people who don't smoke, and spend your break with them.
* b Quitting smoking may impact your social life. You don't have to skip parties altogether, but if you do go, don't accompany your friends when they go outside for a cigarette. If people are smoking indoors, or if it's an outdoor party, try to sit or stand as far away as possible from people who are smoking. Step out for a breath of fresh air if you need to—but don't smoke!
* Alcohol. After you have had a drink, your resolve not to smoke may weaken. You may choose to give up or cut down on drinking alcohol when you first quit smoking. Varying the kind of alcohol and the place where you drink may help break the trigger, but it will not help with the weakened willpower.

An Easy Way to Double Your Weight Loss

Keeping a food diary can double your weight loss, according to Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon in one of the largest and longest-running weight loss maintenance trials ever conducted. The study included participants with an average age of 55 who were from four U.S. cities, Portland, Oregon; Baltimore, Maryland; Durham, North Carolina; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The results were stunning. Those who kept a food diary lost about 18 pounds, compared to 9 pounds for those who did not keep such a diary.

"The more food records people kept, the more weight they lost," said lead study author Dr. Jack Hollis, a researcher at Kaiser Permanente. "Those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. It seems that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories." In addition to keeping food diaries and turning them in at weekly support group meetings, participants were asked to follow a heart-healthy DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low-fat or non-fat dairy, attend weekly group sessions and exercise at moderate intensity levels for at least 30 minutes a day. After six months, the average weight loss among the nearly 1,700 participants was approximately 13 pounds. More than two-thirds of the participants (69 percent) lost at least nine pounds, enough to reduce their health risks and qualify for the second phase of the study, which lasted 30 months and tested strategies for maintaining the weight loss.

"More than two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. If we all lost just nine pounds, like the majority of people in this study did, our nation would see vast decreases in hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke," said study co-author Dr. Victor Stevens, a Kaiser Permanente researcher. For example, in an earlier study Stevens found that losing as little as five pounds can reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure by 20 percent.

What is a food diary? "Keeping a food diary doesn't have to be a formal thing. Just the act of scribbling down what you eat on a Post-It note, sending yourself e-mails tallying each meal, or sending yourself a text message will suffice. It's the process of reflecting on what you eat that helps us become aware of our habits, and hopefully change our behavior," says Dr. Keith Bachman, a Weight Management Initiative member. "Every day I hear patients say they can't lose weight. This study shows that most people can lose weight if they have the right tools and support. And food journaling in conjunction with a weight management program or class is the ideal combination of tools and support." The study findings were published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Something in Water Causes Diabetes?

Uh oh. Even if you give up the burgers and fries and faithfully exercise most days of the week, you may still develop type 2 diabetes just by doing what's good for you: drinking water. Low-level arsenic exposure, possibly from drinking water, has been linked to this form of diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes, according to a new analysis of government data by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Associated Press reports that although utilities use filtration systems to eliminate arsenic, it can still get into drinking water naturally when minerals dissolve or through industrial pollution from coal burning and copper smelting. The Hopkins researchers analyzed the medical tests of 788 adults and found a nearly fourfold increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes in people with low arsenic concentrations in their urine compared with people who had even lower levels. Specifically, those who had type 2 diabetes had 26 percent higher inorganic arsenic levels than people without type 2 diabetes. (Some types of seafood contain nontoxic organic arsenic so the researchers adjusted their analysis for signs of seafood intake.)

This isn't the first study to show a link between arsenic and type 2 diabetes. Research in other countries has also made that connection, but only with high levels of arsenic; however, this is the first study to show that even low levels can cause this disease. "The good news is, this is preventable," lead author Dr. Ana Navas-Acien told AP, adding that new safe drinking water standards may be needed if the findings are duplicated in future studies. That research has already begun with a new study of 4,000 people.

How can arsenic contribute to diabetes? That is not known, but laboratory studies show that arsenic impairs insulin secretion in pancreas cells treated with an arsenic compound.

There is good news: Data for this study were collected in 2003 and 2004. In 2001, the U.S. government lowered arsenic standards for public water systems to 10 parts per billion; public water systems had to comply with the new standard by 2006. So the amount of arsenic in public water systems should be far less than when the data were collected.

What is aerobic exercise? Aerobic means "with oxygen," so aerobic exercise is exercise that improves oxygen function and metabolism, such as walking, running, swimming, bicycling or jumping rope. Weight training is anaerobic exercise.

HealthDay News reports that as we age we experience a decline in maximal aerobic power that is first noticeable in middle age and decreases by measurable amounts every decade. When it falls far enough, doing any activity is difficult without major fatigue. For example, a sedentary man who is 60 years old has maximal aerobic power that is nearly half of what it was when he was 20.

However, the University of Toronto research team, led by Dr. Roy Shephard, found this doesn't have to happen. If we maintain aerobic fitness through regular high-intensity aerobic exercise, we can actually increase our maximal aerobic power by 25 percent, which equals 10 to 12 biological years. "There seems good evidence that the conservation of maximal oxygen intake increases the likelihood that the healthy elderly person will retain functional independence," Shephard told HealthDay News.

Translation: Exercise to look and feel younger.

It's not just about vanity: Aerobic exercise reduces the risk of serious disease and promotes faster recovery after injury or illness. It also helps maintain muscle power, balance and coordination, which reduces the risk of falls, reports HealthDay News.

The analysis was published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
