How to Get a Shot and Feel No Pain

Just as the nurse is about to jab your arm with that flu shot, cough. Coughing causes a temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, which blocks the areas in the spine where pain originates, according to Men's Health magazine editor Dave Zinczenko.

Who knew? You can play tricks on your body to alleviate minor aches and pains. Zinczenko calls them simple self-healing tricks. "Whenever we're feeling achy or under the weather, we reach for the drugs in the medicine cabinet," Zinczenko told ABCNews.com. "But the body has its own hidden cures, once you know how to push your body's own buttons."

Here are three more of Zinczenko's self-healing tricks:

Tickle in your throat
Scratch your ear. Opening the ear canal with just a little scratch will stimulate the nerves in such a way that it creates a reflex in the throat. That causes a muscle spasm or gag, and that can relieve the tickle.

Stuffy nose
To help clear a stuffy nose, push your tongue to the top of your mouth while you use your index finger to push on the spot between your eyebrows. By pushing on both places simultaneously, you'll move the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages and moves back and forth like a seesaw, says Zinczenko. Doing this loosens the congestion, and in about 20 seconds your sinuses will drain.

Brain freeze
When you get an ice cream headache, stop it fast by heating your mouth with your tongue. Just push your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much of it as possible and hold it there. Zinczenko says that when the mouth gets very cold, it fools the body into thinking the brain is also freezing--and that causes the headache as the body overcompensates with heating.
